Tips for recovering business profitability after restructuring

A quick market shift, disruptive technology, a more difficult performance target, and unpredictably regulatory changes…all of these factors can have an impact on your company’s profitability.

A reorganization can help your company get back on track, but it’s critical to follow the right processes and have the right assistance. Follow these suggestions to get your thinking off to a good start.

  • Have a clear picture of what’s going on.

When growth is slowing, the biggest error you can do is to remain in denial. While the notion of needing to reorganize can be difficult to accept—even if it is a necessary step in adapting your organization to a new reality—it is critical to face the facts.

  • Don’t avoid making the necessary changes

You’ll have to make decisions, some of which will be more difficult to implement than others. Changes are required, including asset sales, employee reductions, and a reassessment of the business plan.

Cutting costs isn’t the only way to restructure a company. It’s also changing the way it does business to meet new market demands. You’ll have to keep the talents that are necessary for the new vision.

  • Plan to keep a close eye on things.

A restructuring plan must be monitored on a frequent basis to ensure that meaningful progress is being made. At the very least, the outcomes, both operational and financial, must be reviewed on a monthly basis.

  • Make your vendors your partners.

Another blunder to avoid is failing to notify your main suppliers of your predicament. Instead, you should work on strengthening your bonds with them.

  • Expect new investments.

When things start to look up, it’ll be time to think about making investments to help your company grow.
